A Proof of Concept Prototype for Augmented Reality in Information Products

Presentation Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) takes a users view of the real world and superimposes computer generated images or other content when viewed through the lens of a device such as the camera on a smart phone, tablet or smart glasses. Augmented Reality (AR) is replacing user manuals at an increasing rate. This is seen extensively in the automotive and aerospace markets where Audi and Volkswagen have created Augmented Reality Service and Maintenance manuals viewed with a smartphone or tablet.  Boeing and Airbus are using AR for repair and maintenance, as well as training for their commercial and military aviation products. Projected savings for using Augmented Reality coupled with wearable technology is in the billions for the field service industry alone. Research has also shown that maintenance tasks are completed faster when the procedures are delivered via AR in comparison with tasks supported by traditional documentation. With the expected growth in AR and AR enabled devices,  customers in certain industries will not only expect it, but will eventually demand it. We will share one of the first steps we took in preparation for delivering AR in our Information Products.

Meet the Presenter

Rhonda Truitt has been a technical communications leader for over twenty years. She currently holds the position of Global Director for Huawei Technical Communication Innovation and Best Practices. Rhonda and her team speak at industry conferences, lead pilots for new documentation delivery tools, research trends, organize innovative expert think tanks and drive industry best practices.  Rhonda comes from an extensive background spanning instructional design, curriculum development, customer research, user experience, technical customer documentation, strategic planning, people management, multimedia development and building taxonomy tools. Rhonda’s recent projects include leading her team in the research, planning and development of an Augmented Reality solution for Huawei’s Technical Communications, improving customer satisfaction, and Dynamic Content Publishing. Rhonda is the founder and co-chair of the OASIS Augmented Reality in Information Products Technical Committee and an active member of IEEE. Rhonda holds a BS in Journalism from Ball State University and a MS in Computer Education and Cognitive Systems from the University of North Texas.
